I realized that more often than not these blogrolls seem to point to resources rather than actual blog reading. When I went through my own RSS feed, I realized that of equal competition with serious reading were petite fashion blogs and tumblr humor. I’m on my way to Harvard at the moment for a summer program, its warm, and teaching is finally over, so I thought some celebratory silly blogs were in order.
- Drunk Girls Do Renaissance Paintings in Bathrooms: A buddy of mine makes up half of this Cait-&-Kate Minnesota duo. The premise is simple: the ladies attempt to recreate Renaissance paintings in Minneapolis-St. Paul bar bathrooms at varying degrees of drunkenness and difficulty. They research the painting in detail before the attempt, and part of the challenge is managing the varrying mirrors, surfaces, and fellow users in the setting. My current favorite is from the Moose on Monroe: “The Unequal Couple (Old Man in Love)” (1537) by Lucas Cranach the Elder. (See below.)
- Ugly Renaissance Babies: The premise of this blog is much simpler. It is a running list of shots of babies in Italian Renaissance paintings, most of them freakish and inhuman upon first glance. You’re really in it for the tag lines, however: “Whoa there, Mary, you might want to stick that Christ Cake back in the proverbial oven. I don’t think he’s quite finished yet.”
WTF Renaissance: Perhaps the longest running of these three, the premise is similar to Ugly Renaissance Babies: the captions identify the strangeness and contemporary humor embedded in period paintings. This is far more wide-ranging but has met with huge success. Prints, throw pillows, and other tchotchkes are available as well. (See below.)
